2024 Spiral Body Techniques™ 10-day teacher certification

This professional movement workshop is geared toward a cohort of 5-6 advanced dancers, and aspiring and experienced teachers with an interest in deeper study with Shanahan and Spiral Body Techniques. Those who successfully complete this workshop can become certified to teach Essential Level Spiral Body Techniques studio classes in fall 2024.

Participants will, in most cases, have studied with Shanahan previously through technique classes, workshops, or ensemble experiences. If you have not already let us know you are interested, please reach out with interest or questions about eligibility. Upcoming workshops and classes will serve as prerequisites for those who do not have much experience with SBT, and will be announced via the website and social media throughout the year.

M-F 10:30-4:30 at The Theatre School at DePaul University.

There is a weekend break between Session I and Session II. $2850 for both sessions.

Session I: July 15-19: Spiral Body Techniques Deep Dive:

Session I is a deep dive into Spiral Body Techniques’ practice and principles involving classes, discussion, and guided study of movement and principles. Appropriate for anyone wanting a deep/er dive into Spiral Body Techniques. Dancers are welcome to take only Session I as a personal or professional development opportunity. Session I taken alone does not result in the option for SBT teacher certification. Session I only: $1600.

Session II: July 22-26: Spiral Body Techniques Teaching Intensive: and Practicum:

Session II is a continuation of Session I, with emphasis on teaching Spiral Body Techniques, with lots of practice, feedback, and workshopping to translate the material from Session I and to begin to integrate it into the dancer’s teaching practice. Appropriate for people who want to teach Spiral Body Techniques and/or want to develop a teaching practice in alignment with SBT values and principles. Note that we are asking for two references who can speak to the dancer’s teaching and/or potential as a teacher. We understand that some participants may be experienced teachers, and some may be starting their teaching journey. This is fine. Reference letters can be from current or former teachers, colleagues, or students and do not need to be dance-specific (ie. letters from those teaching yoga, pilates, other forms are perfectly appropriate).

For those taking both Session I and Session II, there will be an additional virtual meeting in autumn 2024 and 3-4 optional Q&A sessions on Zoom with Molly (no additional cost). Currently, Session II participants must take Session I, e.g. we’re not offering Session II on its own at this time.

Note:

1) Each aspiring teacher who takes both Session I and Session II may decide following Session II whether or not to submit a video of themselves teaching a one-hour SBT class for Shanahan’s feedback. This process occurs in October 2024 after a period of digestion, for those who choose that track. Those who successfully complete the teaching and feedback portion will be certified to teach Essential Level Spiral Body Techniques studio classes and will be able to pursue advanced certification in future years.

2) There will be a limited number of spots available for dancers who, upon completing Session I, wish to advance to Session II in the same year.

This workshop is taught by Molly Shanahan with pedagogical and research support by Kristina Fluty, Jeff Hancock, and select SBT teachers.

SBT has cleared the first stage of review with the US Patent and Trademark Office.

We are also happy to start a dialogue with those interested in the 2025 training and to work with you on pre-requisites.

As the second cohort of this endeavor, you will be influential in shaping the directions of Spiral Body Techniques. Should you chose to pursue this path, I hope it feels like the beginning of a long, supportive relationship that fosters aspects of your movement life and identity, contributes to fulfillment and presents opportunities to share those skills with confidence, support, and in a community of lifelong students.

The inaugural workshop in 2023 was a wonderful process with 12 dancers ranging in age and experience and all bringing curiosity, a drive to expertise without compromising body-intelligence, and a willingness to be self-reflective and sometimes critical of the ways that dance has been unproductively punishing in each of our lives.
